Just how realistic is autonomous navigation, given that the law currently states that ships must be manned at all times?

This challenge is driven by current legislation and will have to be faced when we reach the stage of full autonomy. A different approach towards the design criteria of the ships of the future will then be necessary. If there is nobody on board to carry out repairs and maintenance and to guarantee safety, current legislation will have to be closely examined and amended.
