How does autonomous navigation make shipping cleaner and more sustainable?

A major advantage of unmanned navigation is that goods can be transported at much less expense. As a result, freight will be transported by water more frequently. Road transport imposes a much greater burden on the environment than does transport by water. In addition, the rest periods for crew (or double shifts) will no longer be needed and the costs of ‘time on board’ will be lower, as a result of which ships will be able to sail less quickly, and therefore more efficiently, which will have a favourable impact on levels of fuel consumption (‘smart steaming’).
