Do you carry out research too? Get involved!

The purpose of the RAS is to offer an open and low-threshold platform for undertaking research into autonomous ships. Various test locations are available on the campus. This means a wide range of research projects can be carried out. From an enclosed laboratory situation all the way to complete interaction on the water.

Our facilities for your research

Anyone with people, resources, and meaningful research questions can use the lab facilities. This page has information all about the:
– RAS facilities
– Research application procedure
– Rates for a research application and for carrying out research
– Submission of an application form

Open platform
The starting point is that research results from experiments and tests should be open and accessible, given that the facility is publicly funded. This promotes the accumulation and sharing of knowledge. Knowledge is shared on the basis of the ‘open science’ principle. There is scope within this principle for special arrangements to be made regarding contributed data and for dealing with intellectual property (IP).

Low-threshold platform
The RAS is a non-profit organisation. The costs of carrying out research are kept at a low level. This is achieved through smart working partnerships with other research facilities on the Delft University of Technology campus.

RESEARCH APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Once a research application has been submitted, it will be assessed by various experts. They assess the security, privacy, and research ethics aspects of the applications. In the event of a positive recommendation, the substantive and financial agreements are set down in a contract. The required exemptions will be arranged through the RAS. A timetable for the research project can then be drawn up. The time taken for assessing a complete research application is no more than 4 weeks.

SECURITY

The security assessment involves an examination of whether sufficient safeguards have been incorporated for the purpose of controlling risks to those taking part in the research and to the environment. Applications should therefore include an inventory of the risks and control measures. Examples that come to mind include risks to people on whom tests are to be carried out. How is this risk to be controlled? But also risks to the environment. What does a ship do if contact with the control room is lost?

PRIVACY

The privacy assessment involves an examination of whether the gathering and recording of data is in accordance with Dutch privacy legislation. This particularly concerns data that can be traced back to individuals, such as registration numbers, faces, and the like.

RESEARCH ETHICS

The research ethics assessment involves looking at whether the research proposal is in line with the Delft University of Technology code of ethics.

RATES FOR RESEARCH APPLICATION AND RESEARCH

No charge is imposed for the submission of an application. However, this is not the case for using the research facilities. As already mentioned, the RAS is a non-profit organisation. This is why the rates can be kept at a low level. A specific cost-price is set for each submitted research application. The price depends on the use of the facilities. Agreements about this are laid down in advance, for each research application. This means you have clarity about the costs of the RAS before the start of your research project.
Because of the many different research options available, it is not possible to charge standard prices. However, there are starting rates that apply. Please contact us for more information.

SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION FORM

An application form must be submitted in advance for every test.
